This tree was obtained in January 1995. The only
attraction at that time was the base of the tree.
Since the top of the
tree had interesting possibility to develop for a small tree, I decided to air
layer the tree starting from just below the branches.. |

|
| After a year, new shoots grew from the base of the tree as
well as from the top portion of the tree. It was then cut into half and potted
as two trees in the summer of 1996. |

| The rest of the explanation is focus on the lower portion
of the tree: Following the separation, the main task was to heal over the wound
by allowing more branches to develop. At the same time, the main trunk was
allowed to grow so that the tapering could be more pleasing. |

|
| As you can see from the opposite picture, a sacrifice
branch of the tree was allowed to grow to help the healing of the scar and also
to fatten the base of the new top. |
