This maple was purchased in the late winter of 1995. The left branch died and had rotted all the way to the soil line as shown in the picture. The death branch was cleaned and painted with lime sulfur for protection. Since maple wood is not long lived like conifer wood, the rot had continued. .
During the next 3 years while the top was growing and detailed branching was developing, the trunk rotted further losing its artistic base, I had to clean all the dead wood and let it dry thoroughly. I then lined the interior of the trunk with epoxy and forced a rock into it. The rock was shaped with a chisel to fit.
After another few years of careful training and developing, this picture shows how the tree looks in November 2000
